Opportunities For Attorneys To Help Migrants
Dear Friends & Colleagues,
Things are really bad for migrants. It’s tempting to stop paying attention because it feels hopeless. I’m not here to feed you rainbows and sunshine about how we can change the situation. Only the electorate can do that, collectively.
BUT – there are some projects happening that will give you the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of several starfish, so please join me if you can.
First, this February 28 training hosted by the Austin Bar Association will show lawyers how to represent migrants trapped in Mexico under the MPP program. And also, we are continuing the monthly detention visits, but this year we are staying closer to home and heading to Taylor, Texas, only 45 minutes from Austin. Please mark your calendars and join us!
In solidarity,
Kate
The Starfish Story
An old man was walking on the beach one morning after a strom. In the distance, he could see someone moving like a dancer.
As he came closer, he saw that it was a young woman picking up a starfish and gently throwing them into the ocean.
“Young lade, why are you throwing a starfish into the ocean?”
“The sun is up, and the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die”, she said.
“But young lady, do yo not realize that there are many miles of beach and thousands of starfish? You cannot possibly make a difference.”
The young woman listened politely, then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea.
“It made a difference for that one.”

Representing Asylum Seekers Pro Bono Under the Remain in Mexico Program
Speakers:
Lindsay Gray, VECINA
Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, Lincoln-Goldfinch Law, PLLC
Daniel J. Bleiberg, Jones Day
Under the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as “Remain-in-Mexico,” thousands of asylum seekers find themselves waiting in Mexico throughout their U.S. immigration court process. Current statistics show that less than 2% of these asylum seekers are represented, and those that do not have counsel are five times more likely to have their asylum claim denied. This CLE focuses on representing asylum seekers subject to MPP pro bono. Upon completion of the CLE, you will be offered the opportunity to get involved, along with additional training and mentorship to guide you along the way.
1 hour partic. CLE
